Vasundhara and Kapono turned out to be looking through the academic journals– huh, I didn’t expect that to be their thing.
Vasundhara looked a bit startled, but she gave me a small smile. Kapono peeped up at me silently from behind a copy of the International Journal of Earth Sciences.
Kapono’s face lit up as he turned the page once more. He looked up at both of us with a grin.
He pointed to an intricate illustration of a tree– it didn’t look like any tree I’d seen before, though. The leaves were huge, and the trunk had scales on it, almost like a pineapple.
I started to say something that in retrospect would’ve sounded horribly condescending, but thankfully Vasundhara cut me off with a small shake of her head. She smiled down at Kapono as she waited for him to finish his sentence.
I took a closer look at the pages, and sure enough… “Kapono Alana,” signed on both the illustration and the article. Holy crap! His art was gorgeous, and the writing…
This tubby little guy with pompom hair was an academic force to be reckoned with! Of all people, you’d think I would know by now not to judge a book by its cover.
I admired the illustration for a little bit longer before handing the journal back to Kapono. I was just about to leave when I remembered why I was here in the first place.
Kapono nodded solemnly and gave Vasundhara a pat on the arm before putting the journal back on the shelves.
She seemed to brighten up a little after that, and I wandered off to continue my search.
